A FINE CASED 20-BORE TUBELOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON, serial no. 8201,
for 1817, possibly built as a pellet lock and converted by the makers to tubelock, with browned twist 30 1/4in. barrels with Charles Lancaster maker's mark, the raised top-rib signed 'JOSEPH MANTON HANOVER SQUARE LONDON' (refreshed), patent breeches with platinum lined offset touch-holes and platinum maker's poincons marked 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT' together with a crown, top-tang with acanthus scroll engraving, flat bar-action locks with feathered scroll engraving and serpentine birds heads to the front of bars, hinged and rollered tube-clamps (one external bridle cracked) and signed below the tension springs 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT', engraved slab-sided hammers with knife-edge noses, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture and complete with its makers walnut storage case lined and compartmented in green baize, the locks stored on a platform at one end and complete with an Irish form shot bandolier, a good leather covered flask by James Dixon, two Eley Bros. wire cartridges and other sundry accessories
